The last few days have flown past. No sooner had I stopped updating this blog last Wednesday, when Roxi, our long haired chihuahua went into major contractions.. But bless her, she was like this for the next three hours with no sign of a pup. Then, finally, just before we were about to get her off to the vet for a possible emergency cesarean, Roxi managed one last push and out popped 2 little feet. Unfortunatly, these were the back feet of the pup, and they were out of the amniotic sac, so we had to move fast, the head was obviously stuck and we didn't know if it was breathing, dead or alive at this point.
My partner grasped at the teeny little feet, all wet and slimey and purple, and I stood Roxi on her feet, and lifted up her belly waiting for the next contraction, and my partner then pulled the feet towards Roxi's belly, and eventually, 2 or 3 pushes later, out popped pup number 1, and Boy was it huge...
We set to work on it straight away, Luckily, the sac was still around the head, so we broke into that, cleared all the airwaves and gave the pup a good rub, just as we thought we had lost the little mite, he let out a squeel and all was well. We cut the cord and handed him to mum, full of Joy...

Phew, what an afternoon, we were exhausted after the drama, and I dare say poor Roxi wasn't feeling her best either, but she licked away at her new arrival as we prepared for the next...

1 and a half hours later, she finally let the next one out, again in breech position, but this was a smaller pup and practically popped out..A little girl..and boy does she like the sound of her own voice now she has got one...

After an other hour, we had our third girl, and she was a typical text book delivery,
everything went perfect, then as if shelling peas from a pod, out popped number 4 and number 5 within minutes of each other.

The whole delivery process was over by 8pm, and we settled them all down in their nice fresh clean pen, and headed off to the drinks cabinet for a well earned tot, to wet the new litters' head of course!!

So, another first time mum, with another litter of 5, crikey our Chihuahuas are fond of a treat..

Mum is well chuffed with her new litter, and apart from wingey number 2, all are happy little pups...

So now Roxi's pups are 5 days old, and Daisy's are 11 days old. I have to just say, Roxi's pups were really large compared to Daisys', in fact the total weight of Roxi's litter at birth, weighed the same as Daisys' litter at Day 4. no wonder Roxi had a hard time..

The two mums' are so different at their new roles. Daisy is so sweet, and caring and protective. She is more than happy for me and my partner to handle her brood, but is very protective against anybody else going near them, a good thing I think, and she ensures that they drink, pee and poo and stay warm at all times. She really is the perfect mum. Roxi on the other hand, hasn't taken to it quite as enthusiastially as Daisy. She has a tendency to let the pups cuddle up together with each other whilst she spreads herself out on the floor nearby, and she is feeding them regularly, but it does seem to be a chore for her, sometimes she just lies there and falls asleep whilst one or two suckle away, and the other pups are wondering were mum is at the other side of their bed. So we are watching for this like a hawk and putting the pups to mum to ensure they are not missing out on vital meals, and ensuring that they are peeing and pooing ok. Roxi is a little bit frustrating, but the pups are growing well, and we are adding extra heat for times when mum can' be bothered, and things are going well with them all. She is still a little darling though, and she is more than happy for us to give a helping hand, so long as she dosn't take the micheal as I am sure she would be happy for us to take over full stop..

Now I am painting a bad picture, she isn;t really that bad of a mum, just a little confsed I think, with this being her first. bless....

Now, whilst Roxi and Daisy are busy with their offspring, the idea was to let Troy and Zena, our 2 other pooches, share their den together and keep each other company. But, as always , good plans never seem to come together, as Zena has come into her first heat, and as she is only 7 months old, so we have also had to split Troy and Zena up from each other. Crickey, we have 4 dogs in 4 different rooms at the minute, so we are frantically running around each one at a time, and at the moment it is impossible to keep our little boy, Troy happy as all he wants is to play doctors and nurses with Zena. Bless him, he is usually such a loving, easy going, laid back little lad, but at the moment he is so frustrated he dosn't want anything to do with me right now. It'll pass though in a few days (I hope, I want my sweet little baby back...)

That is probably the most upsetting thing about all this, that our pooches are all on their own, and usually they love nothing more than playing and cuddling up to each other. Oh well, it will only be for another couple of weeks at most, all being well that we can pop Zena and Troy back together, then Daisy and Roxi can start joining in too with their playtimes...

All 5 x pups are doing extremely well, and are gaining an average of 12-20g p/day in weight.
I have taken some pictures today of all the pups, they are so cute....

Daisy (mum) is coping extremely well, although I would be happier if she would eat a bit more than she is doing. However, the vet did say that it was normal for them to have a slight loss of appetite for during the first few days, and so long as she is drinking plenty of fluids, this will help keep up her milk production. And she is drinking plenty, so nothing to worry about.

My long-haired Chi, Roxi-Pocket, is due to deliver her litter any day now. It will be her 63rd day of pregnancy on Saturday (29th july), but she may well produce today as she is very quiet and staying by her bed this morning, pretty much the same scenario as for Daisy on the day she gave birth, so fingers crossed she will deliver today. I hope she does to be honest, as she is enormous, and so hot and uncomfortable in this heat..

Ok, thats just about it for Day 6 of Daisy's litter Diary. I will keep you posted on how Roxi gets on, and keep adding diary entries on a daily basis.

21st July: Day 2

Daisy-May Duke is making an extremely good Mum, considering this is her first litter, and considering it was such a large litter of 5 pups for a chihuahua. But she is very loving, very protective, but is also happy to let me handle the pups to check them out, and happy to let me stroke her and feed her etc.. She has always been a very loving chi anyway, we just thought that the litter may have made her a bit snappy, but No, not at all, far from it..

Anyway, she has been nursing the pups for 12 hours now, and all are happy and content with fat little bellies. We rang and asked the vet to pop out and see Daisy just to check that she was ok, and to give the pups a good looking over to make sure there were no problems.

Daisy let the vet pick her up and give her a thorough examination. She was very good for him. The vet was very pleased with her condition, and her milk production, and with her weight etc.. He gave her an injection to contract the womb and remove any retained placenta etc.. and then he checked over each pup. There were no cleft pallats, no hernias, no other problems, and they all got a clean bill of health. He did say to keep an eye on the little sable girl, being the smallest in the litter, just to make sure that she got her fair share of milk, but otherwise, he was over the moon with Daisy and pups..

I decided to weigh the pups today. They range from 86g up to 124g. I will weight the pups everyday and provide my results in the diary..

Diary of a Chihuahua Puppy:-

I would like to share with you, the joyful event of a newly arrived litter of Chihuahua puppies to our family, and would like to share their growing and progress through this blog, with daily updates and pictures..

Daisy-May Duke, our Champagne/Cream Smooth Coated Chihuahua gave birth to her first litter of pups on the 20th July 2006. There were 5 pups in the litter. First to arrive at 5.07pm, after just 1 hour in labour, was:-

• a Red/Tan Boy with a white tip on his tail, white paws and a white belly. He is going to be the spitting image of his dad, Troy
• 2nd to enter the world was a teeny little sable coloured girl, at 5.30pm. Both she and her brother came out tail end first, in the breach position, so I helped to break the birthing sac surrounding her first to help give them their first breath of air into their teeny lungs.

We thought the 2nd pup was the last in the litter as mum seemed to shrink quite considerably, but low and behold, nearly an hour later at 6.24pm, out popped pup number 3:-

• a larger Sable girl. She was a bit of a monster in size compared to the first 2, we don't know how Daisy hid this one in her belly.. She came out head first, but without her sac, all the placenta stayed inside mum, which was a bit worrying.

Another hour later, at 7.29pm, out came pup number 4. Gosh Daisy was doing so well. She was letting us get involved, she was frantically licking and looking after the first 3 pups, and here we have a 4th to add to the litter:-

• A teeny champgne coloured boy. Again, he came out without his sac, so now mum has 2 placenta in her womb, we will tell you about this shortly. This little boy is going to be the spitting image of his mum..
• And last but not least, at 8.12pm, out popped Puppy number 5. This one was helped along by my partner, as the sac was completely intact, and was quite tough. But once out in the open air, we have a pure white (to my delight) little girl. Well actually she too was quite large.
  

So there we have it, 5 pups, of which 3 girls and 2 boys. By 8.30pm, mum had her nest made, and all pups were fumbling around her belly and feeding quite happily on mums milk. We let Daisy eat 2 of the placenta, and we threw away the third so as to avoid her getting diareah, and we waited for the 2 retained placenta to come out..

20th July 2006. What A happy event. Everything went smoothly, no complications, and all pups and mum doing extrememyl well.

Hi to all fellow Chihuahua lovers. I have 4 chihuahuas. 3 girls, one is a long haired fawn colour, called Roxi. Daisy-May Duke is a light champagne/cream coloured smooth coated chihuahua, Zena Warrior Princess is a 7 month old fawn smooth coated Chi, and then my little darling baby Troy, he is my little baby boy, although not a baby at 14 months of age, he is a red smooth coated chihuahua..

We live in the UK. All my Chi's share my home with myself, my partner, and our other dog CJ, a 9 year old Doberman, and belive it or not, they all (WE all!) get on like a house on fire).
I don't show my Chi's, they are purely my beloved pets, and live in and amongst our house and garden..
